P2F 2010 Second Round Elimination (22 Dec 2009)

In a slight contrast to the First Elimination Round, where the judges found it difficult to fill up the quota of 80 contestants (where only 76 made it to the second round), this time they found it difficult to eliminate the number of contestants to just 40. Eventually, they had to settle with Top 42.

May be they have more time to practice, or may be they have more stage experience, to the surprise of the judges, many contestants performed much better than their first time on the P2F stage. Whatever the reason is, it is indeed a very encouraging sign as P2F 2010 gears towards another exciting elimination round to be held from 13 to 16 January 2010, at Studio 4, Radio Televisyen Brunei, Sungai Akar, Bandar Seri Begawan.

For this round, the participants were divided into groups of 5 through random draw, and each of them had 2 minutes to sing his or her won choice of song without music. A few contestants took the initiative of bringing along their guitars, which is usually an added advantage. Judging panel for this round was made up of Joe M, Hans Anwar and Summer Ho. Once again, judges gave their comments after each group performed. Overall, they were very pleased that many showed improvement from previous round, but some still performed below expectations.

Interestingly, the most common comment coming from the judges was the contestant’s attire. Some received praise because of their effort of dressing up appropriately, but many were ‘under-dressed’. Judges expressed their desire to see improvement in the contestants’ attire, because as the elimination round is drawing to a close, and the contestants’ standard is quite even, the attire could play a role in deciding who is moving into the next round, especially in the case of very close scores. It also shows that which contestant is serious about this competition, said one judge.

After the last contestant sang, and before the Top 40 was announced, much to the surprise of the contestants (and audience too), they were told to prepare to sing any song for 30 seconds only, should they fall into the KIV group. This group was for contestants who performed below their best during this round, but showed potentials in the previous rounds. Therefore they were given final chance to redeem themselves.

When the judges finally emerged from the deliberating room, they announced 34 names who received unanimous approval from the judges to proceed to the next round. From the remaining contestants who did not get the first nod from the judges, only 16 were invited to sing again for 30 seconds each. At the end, 8 contestants sang the time of their lives and successfully joined the 34 names earlier to complete the Top 40 list, except in this case, it’s Top 42, because 3 of them shared the same score.

The Third Elimination Round has a very different format, contestants are finally going to be singing with music. They are required to submit their song choice in karaoke or minus one format to the organizer. Apart from the attire, judges’ main advice to the contestants is to work on their facial expression, and most importantly song choice, as this is their final chance to make or break the Top 16, which is the much awaited round of Live Concerts.
